Mike Lewis. Mike is Professor of Oral Medicine, Cardiff University and honorary consultant in Oral Medicine for the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. Mike was born in Aylesbury and lived in Aston Clinton for the first 18 years of his life. He attended Berkhamsted School for Boys and Aylesbury Grammar School before going to Dundee Mike is Professor of Oral Medicine, Cardiff University and honorary consultant in Oral Medicine for the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board.Mike was born in Aylesbury and lived in Aston Clinton for the first 18 years of his life. He attended Berkhamsted School for Boys and Aylesbury Grammar School before going to Dundee University to study dentistry in 1975. Following dental graduation, he worked in a number of NHS positions for four years and gained the Dental Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. Mike moved to Glasgow in 1983 to undertake a research fellowship for three years. On completion of his PhD, he undertook his specialist training in Oral Medicine over six years whilst a lecturer in oral medicine. In 1992, he moved to Cardiff University to take up a senior lecturer and honorary consultant post in oral medicine. Mike was promoted to a personal chair in 2000.
Mike has served in a number of senior professional roles including, Dean of the School of Dentistry at Cardiff University (2010 - 2017), Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow (2007 - 2010) and Director of the Clinical Board for Dentistry, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board (2010 - 2018)
Mike has provided the leadership for the undergraduate training of dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists. In addition, he has had senior national leadership roles for specialist postgraduate training of UK and overseas graduates. From an NHS perspective, he has chaired committees involved in the integrated delivery of primary, secondary and community dental services.
As an academic, Mike has published over 200 scientific articles and co-authored six medical textbooks. He has delivered more than 700 postgraduate lectures worldwide. In addition, he has been President of the British Society for Oral Medicine, President of the British Society for Oral & Dental Research, Dental Representative on the Advisory Council for Misuse of Drugs (Home Office) and Dental Representative on the Scientific Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (Department of Health).
From a background of more than 40 years in the dental profession, involving a wide spectrum of educational and NHS service roles, Mike feels that he can now contribute to dentistry by bringing this experience to the General Dental Council. He hopes to serve the clinical dental profession well in his role as a registrant member.

I served as Sub-Dean of Dentistry (Clinical Studies) from February 2001 to December 2003. This post had a number of responsibilities related to the pastoral care of the undergraduate dental students. In addition to providing day-to-day support to students who find themselves in difficulty, the Sub-Dean administers the Academic Staff Committee and Personal Tutoring Scheme.
I am the Theme Leader for the Human Diseases (including microbiology, pathology, surgery, medicine and pharmacology) component of the undergraduate dental curriculum.
I was the Divisional representative on the Dental Academic Quality and Audit Committee which facilitated all aspects of the course, teaching and student appraisal within the Dental School. The School was awarded the highest grade (excellent) in the Teaching Quality Assessment in December 1997.

Philip-John Lamey, BSc (Hons), BDS, MB, ChB, DDS (Edin), FDSRCPS, FFDRCSI, FDSRCS (Eng) is a Consultant in Oral Medicine at the Edinburgh Dental Institute in Scotland. From 1992 to 2014 he was Professor of Oral Medicine and Consultant in Oral Medicine at Queen's University Belfast and he also served as Dean of the School of Dentistry at the university (1998–2003). Dr. Lamey is a past President of the British Society for Oral Medicine. As a research academic, Dr. Lamey has fostered close links with industry and has established collaborations with many leading researchers worldwide over many years. His research interests have included herpetic infection, oral candidosis (particularly in association with diabetes), leukoplakia and mouth cancer. He has authored more than 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals and is the author or co-author of eight textbooks.
